Name: Peter Rumancek
Canon: Hemlock Grove
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Point: “In poor taste” (1x04)
Number: 116
Setting: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemlock_Grove
A small creepy town with woods and a hell of a lot of fog. A stock standard universe with supernatural creatures. And a lot of murder. Don't visit.
History:

Peter was born a Romani Gypsy. He lived a lot of his life on the road with his mother Lynda Rumaneck. They moved from place to place, sometimes from couch to couch. When he did go to school, he kept his head down for as long as he was there.

It’s implied that the Rumanecks have never stayed in one place long enough for Peter to form any serious connection with anyone, since his mother describes Roman Godfrey, one of the boys in Hemlock Grove, as his first friend. Whenever a town got a little edgy around them, it wasn't unusual for him to arrive at the place they were staying, and have his mother hand him a box to pack up their small collections of belongings. They are shown to have a system in place for packing up and leaving when they need to, such as when “Chasseur” visits the Rumanecks in episode three.

Although his mother is completely human, Peter is a werewolf. We’re shown in a flashback that it’s something both he and his mother have been well aware of since before the series started. A group of gypsies gather for Peter’s grandfather Nikolai’s funeral, who was quite clearly of the same “clinical lycanthropy”, and they make Peter cut off his head to make sure “nothing bad happens".

Peter has always been a werewolf. It’s simply a part of life for him. Not too much is shown about his past, just a few simple flashbacks and a few second hand accounts. Peter Rumancek and his mother move to Hemlock Grove after Peter’s uncle dies, moving into a small trailer just behind the Godfrey mansion which is where the series takes place.

The series:

Peter lives in Hemlock Grove for a few months in a tiny trailer with his mother and his damn adorable cat. Each month Peter had his werewolf transformation, and everything was fine until about three months later, when Brooke Bluebell is killed and torn apart in a tiny shed near the woods. Around the same time, Peter starts having dreams with the “ouroboros – a snake eating its own tail” symbol appearing prominently. One of those times he wakes up to find a small girl standing over him, Christina, who then accuses him of being a werewolf for the simple fact he has index and middle fingers are the same length. Which “apparently” is a clear sign he’s a werewolf. Peter admits it, in jest. The next day the school is buzzing with the rumor that he actually is one, which is a slight fuck up as the town was already suspicious of gypsies. The same day Peter runs into both Roman and Shelly Godfrey, noticing the faint blue light coming out of the latter’s skin as she walks under a light. Later that day, Peter talked to his mother about meeting the Godfreys, who have their named plastered over everything in town. Apparently Roman is a “upir”, which is Russian for vampire.

His mother warns him to stay away from them, but Peter’s curiosity about the family increases. Days later, Brooke’s body is finally found and the Sheriff interrogates Peter on the way to school, but they let him go after a few moments, since walking down the street in itself is not a crime. After the attack, the rumors of his werewolf nature have been spread to the entire town. That night Peter goes to the shed where Brooke was killed, only find Roman Godfrey there as well, who accuses him of killing her. Peter shoots the same accusation back at Roman, which he denies. They’re almost caught by the police but Roman somehow gets them to leave with just a simple look, which unnerves Peter and he leaves not after.

Back in school, everyone is preparing for the Halloween Homecoming dance. Peter talks to Shelley in the hallway, even going as far as to flirt with her a little. That’s interrupted by some uncreative assholes who call him a “wolf fucker” and smack his books to the floor. Roman walks over to help Peter pick up his stuff, and offers him a ride home because apparently they’re sort of friends now. On the way to the Rumancek trailer home, Roman and Peter bond over Roman’s car and by trading stories. When Roman tries to talk to Peter about his ouroboros dreams, and the feelings he gets sometimes that “something really important is about to happen,” Peter completely shuts him out even though it’s obvious he feels the same way. Peter chooses not to go to the dance, despite his clear connection to Roman.

The next day Roman once again strikes up a conversation with him, Peter calls him out on the fact the guy is only doing it because of the effect that the rest of the school stares at them both in fascination. Roman admits it, later in class, Peter receives a note that says “Can I watch?”, and Peter invites him back to the trailer to watch his transformation that night, which he does. Peter transforms and returns the next day to find Roman on his couch to waiting for him. He tells them both he “smelled something bad out there” and makes Roman promise not to go spreading the fact he turns into a wolf around. Roman agrees. Meanwhile, across town, another body is found. Peter sleeps the entire day after his transformation, his body needing the rest. Peter once again has another dream, this time with Roman standing at a mill, the same symbol of the snake eating its own tail on the boy’s shirt.

The next day, Roman and Peter talk in the stairwell about the transformation and the new dead body. Peter claims that it’s a “Vargulf, a werewolf that’s gone insane”. Since most werewolves only attack when provoked. Roman voices the idea of finding it and killing it. Peter refuses, once again shaking off Roman’s words, and instead goes to visit his cousin, who informs him that he should stay out of the vargulf’s way and also, more notably, to stay away from Roman. Peter takes her advice and goes to back up the trailer, so they can leave this shitty town and the attacks behind. Unfortunately they’re stopped by Dr. Chasseur who questions if Peter “walks in the shadow of a wolf” and thus makes it impossible for Peter to leave or it would be suspicious. Peter goes back to Roman and tells him about Dr. Chaseur’s vist and agrees that they can investigate the vargulf and they both go to the latest victim's grave to dig her up a few nights later.

Peter teases the way Roman chooses to dress up for this little late night grave robbing, since he looks like something out of a heist film. They trade stories about funerals they’ve been to as they dig up the body. Bonding while they talk Peter tells Roman about his grandfather Nikolai’s funeral, and the time he had to chop off Nikolai’s head because “bad things happen if you don’t cut off the head.” Peter does what he came to do, taking a small piece of the body for a ritual in hopes of finding out how killer her before, slipping it into a jar. They’re almost caught by the police and are forced to leave the scene of the crime.

Personality:

Peter is comfortable in his position in life. He’s a gypsy, a Romani, someone without a real permanent home and he never really aspires to get beyond that. There’s no real desire for the life that many of the other characters have. While there is a desire for friendship and connection, it never really goes beyond breaking out of the life he’s comfortable with and used to. Despite the somewhat poor lifestyle he lives, as well as being outcasted from most of the town due to the rumors and being “an outcast”, he doesn’t begrudge his circumstances. However, one of the defining things about Peter was that he was lonely by the time he came to Hemlock Grove. Makes sense given that his few family members keep saying he’s “never had a real friend”.

He has a close relationship to his mother Lynda, and his cousin Destiny Rumancek, but it’s how he acts around Roman Godfrey that’s the most telling, because despite having a very clear connection to the boy, he seems more than a little reluctant to form a serious bond with him despite the dreams and the strong feelings that connect them. Perhaps of a product of his upbringing, he’s a bit reluctant to form any serious attachments with anyone. If he’s made to feel that those few connections are misplaced or a bad idea, he simply shuts them down or pushes them away, either to protect himself or before the person disappoints him. We see this when Peter leaves him in the Godfrey mill later on in the series. The simple truth is he’s never needed anyone as much as they’ve needed him, and he prefers that way.

Peter is charming, often using humor to keep people’s attention, as well various magic tricks or slight of hand to distract and amuse. It’s something he takes pleasure in. He also smokes pot, notably while recovering from his transformations, but he is not shown to use other recreational drugs.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations

Peter’s abilities break down two ways: first the state he’s in as a wolf, and second when he’s still very much in his human form. At this canon point, Peter isn't able to change at will and is still very much subject to the moon’s cycles. When the moon is at its highest point, his transformation happens at sunset. It’s possibly the least fun change you could experience, with the wolf tearing from the inside out, bones cracking in a show of gore and blood. The wolf eats its human skin before moving onto whatever it sets out to do. It’s an unpleasant process.

The wolf itself is much larger than a regular wolf with luminescent yellow eyes. It has increased power and speed as a result, as well powerful jaws that are certainly something you don’t want to be on the other end of. Werewolves in the same canon have made a mess of victims before. The change back is certainly no less painful and will often require Peter to sleep for most of the following day, or as he often prefers, getting high to deal with the strain to his body. While right now he’s unable to force the changes to his wolf state, there is a gypsy spell he can perform to cause that to happen and to give him the ability control it. Normally, the werewolf will only attack if it’s hungry or provoked. However the creature can sometimes fall into a metal and spiritual illness that turns it into a “Vargulf”, a true monster that kills for the sheer sake of killing. That has yet to happen to Peter. But he’s aware of it happening to other people.

In his human form he has standard human strength, but he does have a few abilities. Peter has perception dreams which foreshadows key events in his life or those around him, coming to him in the form of metaphors. Those normally result in a “bad feeling” Peter gets in his very bones when something is going to happen, is happening or has happened. It also leads his intuition in certain cases like when he’s compelled to go to the the scene of the first murder. It’s also the same gift that allows him to recognize other supernaturals, not simply limited to other wolves. He also has a craving for raw meat after his change.

[ The situation is certainly unique. Waking up covered in goo is a first for him. Waking up naked? Not so much. His eyes flick around to the people closest to him. Some seem just as confused as he is. Of course, that little tingle down the back of his spine is the truly unsettling thing. Some of these people aren't people, or at the very least aren't human. It's too difficult to really pinpoint which, in the gooey undressed crowd around him. It's just a feeling, like a change in the air. Upirs? Wolves? Something else? Actually, that last one wouldn't surprise him considering his luck and the environment.

Right now, it still felt like a dream. As real as this feels, he's still expecting to wake up in the back of his mother's car, or in his hammock. Peter ducks his head to run his nail over the numbers printed onto his arm with a little frown. He feels like he would have remembered getting it. The pain of it, at least. Those numbers don't mean anything to him. They're utterly random. He feels no real connection to him. Peter sighs as he tugs open the locker thta matched the number. Part of him was still expecting to see Roman strolling towards him and for everything to be some sort of Godfrey joke.  ]

Comms Sample:

[ The comms device is on for a few moments, the picture bouncing before it finally it settles on a messy long-haired young man. His eyes squinting at the device for a few moments. Not in confusion, more in annoyance. The camera shifts again as he lowers the camera enough to rest on surface before he’s leaning forward.]

First of all. Fuck this place. Also, can someone please enlighten me to what the hell this place is? Because while wondering around sounds like a fun idea. It’s less appealing in practice.

[ His voice is slow and careful, there’s almost held back humour at the whole situation. Because of course this would fucking happen to him. There’s a lull in conversation there, as if he expects someone to answer him. ]

Fine. Does anyone have a beer at least? Because this shit isn't exactly the easiest to swallow.
